Why Matcha Should Be Part of Your Everyday
Making matcha part of your daily ritual will encourage a daily dose of catechins. Catechins are found abundantly in matcha and help protect your cells from damage.
Matcha contains 4 major catechins;
- epicatechin (EC)
- epicatechin-3-gallate (ECG)
- epigallocatechin (ECG)
- epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG)
These catechins show effective antioxidant activity, due to their ability to neutralise free radicals (an unstable molecule that can damage other molecules, but part of normal cell metabolism), and improve detoxification pathways. Research reported that these catechins have a greater antioxidant capacity than vitamin C, flavanoids AND glutathione!
Green tea, with its abundance of these catechins may also be protective against several environmental pollutants such as:
- smoking
- benzene toxicity
- lead toxicity
- cadmium toxicity
- BPA
- chlorinated solvents
- and can also improve overall ‘toxic’ load, by increasing faecal fat excretion, which helps carry fat-soluble toxins from the body.
Why is this stuff important?
Everyday we are exposed to toxins, they are everywhere and unavoidable. Our bodies are great at detoxing and we detox every minute of every day. HOWEVER, if we are exposed to too many toxins and our ‘pathways’ of detoxification are compromised, overloaded, or not working optimally, then these toxins start to build up, create issues and can drive certain disease states (cancers, hormonal issues, weight gain, cardiovascular disease, neurological conditions etc).
1 cup of matcha is up to 137 times richer in catechins than standard green tea (because you are drinking the whole tea leaf and not just the leftover water). Using food as medicine and incorporating a morning matcha can do more than just improve energy and productivity, it can support overall health and healing. So why not make matcha part of your morning ritual?
